To Trot or Not To Trot?

Ross Jacobs

Hands up who lunges their horse and either instantly or within a lap or two, tell them to trot?

Now keep your hands up if you also start trotting your horse within seconds of sitting in the saddle to ride.

Mmmm.

Desensitization In Training

You might wonder how can this be? How can a horse learn to be okay with a tarp, but not handle a puddle? How can it be ridden in an arena every day, yet freak out if somebody leaves a saddle blanket on the fence?

I think it comes from the way people try to desensitize horses.

A Quiet Mind

I have spent many years trying to tell people about what is a soft horse or what is a horse like when he feels okay. It’s always been a struggle to put these ideas into concepts that have meaning for people. But when I really break it down to the essentials I realize I am just talking about a horse having a quiet mind.

We dream of the perfect horse that is going to be everything we would ever want from our horse. They will make us look like a God in the world of horsemanship and competition. But the truth is that most of the time we look like the village idiot in a village filled with idiots.
